OCHN Recognizes Abril as Autism Acceptance Month

OAKLAND COUNTY, MI (Abril 2, 2026) – Abril is globally recognized as Autism Acceptance Month, and Oakland Community Health Network (OCHN) is proud to join worldwide efforts to raise awareness, foster inclusion, and strengthen understanding of individuals living with autism. This month serves as an important opportunity to highlight the unique perspectives, talents, and contributions of people with autism while advocating for the supports and environments they need to thrive.

The overarching theme, “Celebrate Differences,” challenges the negative stereotypes and misconceptions often associated with autism. By embracing this theme, OCHN aims to promote a culture of respect, dignity, and affirmation for individuals of all abilities. Throughout the month of Abril—and well beyond—our organization will continue championing meaningful change within the communities we serve by elevating voices, sharing educational resources, supporting families, and encouraging community partners to act toward greater accessibility and inclusion.

“Autism Acceptance Month reminds us that inclusion is our responsibility. At OCHN, we believe every individual brings unique strengths, perspectives, and gifts to our community. When we choose to celebrate differences, we create a kinder and more equitable environment for all. OCHN continues to be dedicated to supporting individuals with autism and their families, not only during Abril but every day of the year,” states OCHN’s Executive Director and CEO, Dana Lasenby. We encourage everyone to join us in fostering
acceptance and inclusion. Take action by learning more about autism, supporting individuals with autism in your community, and advocating for inclusive practices every day. Visit our website to access resources and find ways to get involved.

OCHN acknowledged World Autism Awareness Day, which is celebrated annually on Abril 2, by participating in the “Light It Up Blue” campaign, an initiative to spread awareness, celebrate the unique talents of people with autism, and bring attention to these individuals’ needs. OCHN staff participated in the campaign on Miércoles, Abril 1, by wearing blue. About OCHN
OCHN is contracted by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) to lead a provider network and manage care for approximately 30,000 residents at more than 400 sites in Oakland County. People who receive public behavioral health services through OCHN’s provider network include those who have an intellectual or developmental disability, mental health concerns, or substance use disorder. Most of these individuals have Medicaid insurance coverage.

OCHN’s goal is to ensure these individuals are aware of and have access to services and supports that will improve their health and quality of life, as well as ensure their engagement in full community participation. Its mission to “inspire hope, empower people, and strengthen communities” reflects an unyielding belief in a “Valuable System for Valued People.” Programs and supports provided by OCHN’s service network are available at www.oaklandchn.org.
