Affirmations offers a basic training that will provide participants with a foundational understanding of key concepts related to LGBTQ+ identities, terminology, and best practices for engagement. Objectives: [note: objectives are dependent on duration of training] This introductory training will provide participants with the knowledge and skills needed to affirm and support the LGBTQ+ community. By the end of this training, participants will be able to:
1. Differentiate core concepts of identity by defining and applying LGBTQ+ terms, including sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression (SOGIE), while recognizing spectrum and fluidity.
2. Recognize the importance of LGBTQ+ inclusion by connecting disparities data, lived experiences, and personal stories to highlight barriers and inequities.
3. Identify how bias and bigotry operate—from overt discrimination to microaggressions and subtle exclusion—and examine their impact on LGBTQ+ people across intersections of race, gender, sexuality, ability, and class.
4. Reflect on personal and systemic bias by exploring privilege, internalized messages, and their real-world effects on belonging, visibility, and power.
5. Practice inclusive and affirming behaviors by using respectful language, affirming pronouns and names, and applying practical strategies to challenge bias, interrupt microaggressions, and strengthen allyship.
