Lois Shulman

loisLois Shulman is a South Haven High School, Kalamazoo College and Cooley Law School graduate. In addition to her position on OCHN’s board, she served on the Michigan State Hospital Finance Authority Board from 2002 to 2008, and currently sits as a board member on the Sinai Guild, where she is a Friendship Circle volunteer and supporter.

Ms. Shulman says that through her experience of growing up in a small town, she learned early the importance of family and giving back to the community. “I am motivated by my passion to help others and  I sincerely believe that it not only takes a village to raise a child, but also that it takes that same village to support those in need.”

She also believes that it’s essential for OCHN board members to listen to and demonstrate respect for people with disabilities by sending consistent and powerful messages about mental health issues to elected officials, the media and service providers in the community.

“The challenges of using the funding we have requires us to build on the strengths of our system to care for, educate and teach skills to those we serve, so that they might play it forward in our community to help others,” adds Ms. Shulman.

Lois currently serves as Vice Chair on OCHN's Board, as well as 1st Vice President for the Community Mental Health Association of Michigan.
